Tragedy at Virginia Tech

As many of you have heard, yesterday was a tragic day in American Higher Education. Our hearts and thoughts go out to our Region III colleagues at Virginia Tech.

We know that some campuses have planned vigils, memorial services, or other remembrance ceremonies in support of the students, faculty, staff and families of the Virginia Tech community. The Region III Advisory Board has created this blog as way of expressing our thoughts, prayers and support.

As a Virginia tech Hokie of six years, having done both my undergraduate and my graduate work at the university, I am saddened beyond words about the events of this week. I currently work as an academic counselor at Texas Tech, but only recently (months ago) left Blacksburg. I feel lost and overwhelemed with sadness. These feelings are only increased by the distnace, geographically, that I currently have from my home in Blacksburg. I know this is an awful event, but I know that my VT family will come together through the grieving.
Please pray for my fellow hokies and their families.

The Winthrop University community would like to share what we are doing in light of the tragedy that has occurred and hope that others will join us. We are having a vigil this evening at which the Winthrop community will sign/write messages to VA Tech on a Winthrop flag. We will send it on to them to show our solidarity. If other institutions were to do the same, it would provide something that they could hang in their student center showing the outpouring of support.

Students, faculty, and staff at Austin College in Sherman, Texas have responded to the Virginia Tech tragedy by placing a memorial candle in our student center along with pens and paper on which members of our community can write messages and share thoughts and prayers with the Virginia Tech community. Our weekly Midday Prayer service was redesigned in light of the events in Blacksburg and we anticipate that weekly Bible Study and worship will be similarly affected by the tragedy. We are ready to respond to additional student concerns for some campus-wide public response but will wait to learn what students want to do.
